1950 – 1959

We have found 3 newspaper reports about International Women’s Day (IWD) in Derby/shire in the 1950s.

The first report was about an IWD meeting in Chesterfield in 1950. The speaker Marian Ramelson.
In 1950 there was an IWD meeting in Chesterfield at the C0-Op Hall (see advert below). The speaker was Marian Ramelson who was a leading member of the Communist Party. Marian published a book in 1967 titled ‘The Petticoat Rebellion’ about women’s fight for the vote. We have bought a signed copy of her book! (Image coming soon). Find out more about Marian Ramelson.

The second report we found was an article published in the Derby Daily newspaper about the IWD committee ‘quizzing election candidates’ (see below). What isn’t clear is whether the IWD committee was in Derby or whether the report was about the national IWD committtee which was based in London. We also don’t know whether the election candidates responded to the women.
